May 22 Common Tour at 10:00 a.m.
Meet at the gazebo on the town common, near 37 Main Street, Charlton

Take a walking tour around the town common to hear about the houses in this Historic District, and some of the people who lived in them in the past. Free.

June 7 CHS Annual Meeting at 7:00 p.m.
Rider Tavern, 255 Stafford Street

Frank Morrill presents a hands-on historical photography program. In addition, there will be reports of the past year’s CHS activities, and events planned for this year. Refreshments will be served. Free.

July 13 History of Pottery and Brickmaking at 7:00 p.m.
Rider Tavern, 255 Stafford Street, Charlton

Rick Hamelin’s presentation includes a discussion on the pottery and brickmaking industry in the local area, and anecdotal stories. Light refreshments will be served. Free.

August 14 Tour the Rider Tavern and #2 Schoolhouse between 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
255 Stafford Street and 145 Northside Road, Charlton

Costumed guides tell the history of the Rider Tavern and the area around it, incorporating information about the lives of local residents in the 1800s. Continue up to the attic to watch the live demonstration of weaving on the period loom, and hear about the creation of textiles in Charlton. Then head a few hundred feet down Northside Road to the district #2 Schoolhouse, to hear what it was like to attend a one-room school. Donation: $1.00.

September 6 Old Home Day from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Town common, Main Street, Charlton

Enjoy thumbing through the pages of the yearbook from the High School class of 1960. Look at a display of Charlton dairy farms, receive a free newsletter, and shop for Charlton History books and memorabilia.

September 11 History Day between noon and 3 p.m.
Intersection of Stafford Street and Northside Road, Charlton

Explore the Rider Tavern, Militia Lot, and #2 Schoolhouse. View displays, play Federal period games, and enjoy spinning, weaving, and sewing demonstrations. Event is free. Refreshments will be available to purchase.

October 16 District School Memories at 10:00 a.m.
#2 Schoolhouse, 145 Northside Road, Charlton

Share memories of your school days in a Charlton district school, and listen to others reminisce about theirs. Or just sit back and enjoy the stories. This informal time is for both those who attended a district school and for those who would like to listen, even if you did not attend one of the local schools. Refreshments will be served. Free

Volunteer and Sponsorship Opportunities

The Charlton Historical Society welcomes new volunteers and new members! We are also seeking business sponsors to help defray the cost for our twice-yearly newsletter, annual fees for the website www.charltonhistoricalsociety.org, start-up costs for the opening of the tavern during the summer, and future bus tours. Sponsors will be thanked in the advertising for the events and/or in the printed materials.

Charlton Historical Society collaboration with Town on #2 Schoolhouse and Militia Lot

Charlton Historical Society is collaborating with the Town of Charlton to oversee the historic #2 Schoolhouse and the Militia Lot. The Society will “manage the day-to-day operations of the Premises and shall provide an annual report to the Town, which will include an activity review and a report on the current condition of the Premises.” Classes at the school ceased in December 1949. To help continue the preservation of this historical one-room schoolhouse, inventory current displays, volunteer supplies or services, donate district school memorabilia, or relay your memories of the Charlton district schools, contact Cindy Cooper at 508-248-7840.
