Flags of the ACN. Flag on the left is the "Grand Union" consisting
of red & white stripes but has the Union Jack in the corner
instead of the stars that would appear later. It was adopted
shortly after the battles of Lexington & Concord but still expressed
the hope that the colonists could work out a way to form a grand
union with Great Britain. Next is the company flag of the ACN
with the date 1741 when the company was granted a charter from
George II. Next is the French National flag which is a bit on
anachronism here as it didn't appear until after the French
Revolution. It was displayed becuase of the French connection
to the Rider Tavern. The other two flags represent RI military
organizations. |

Carl Hutchinson in the uniform of the 85th Regiment de Saintonge,
one of 5 regiments of infantry who arrived in Newport, RI, in
July of 1780 under the command of le comte de Rochambeau. Le
marquis de Lafayette was part of Rochambeau's staff. The cannon
is an original tube cast by Paul Revere's foundry in Boston
in 1798. It is owned the the State of RI and in the care & custody
of the Artillery Company of Newport. |
